Anderson Farms - New Local Sustainable Pork Farm

Anderson Farms, near Comer, Georgia raises its pigs outdoors on pasture and woods. This is natural grazing at its best! Delicacies for these piggies include legumes, acorns, hickory nuts and roots.  These pigs are calm yet energetic and love a good back rub. With a free-range lifestyle, natural grazing diet and dedicated caretaker, these pigs are easily among the highest quality and best cared for pigs in the South-East.

   Mary Charles Howard, owner of Athens Food Tours, and her husband took a trip out to Anderson Farms this Saturday, January 22nd, to see for themselves what this pig farm was all about.  When they arrived, Benji Anderson, owner of Anderson Farms and his girlfriend, graphic designer and right-hand woman, Katie greeted them with warm smiles and an even warmer BBQ lunch! Benji and Katie knew exactly how to get the conversation going on a positive note! After sharing background stories over delicious BBQ from the farm, the walking farm tour started, guided by Benji and Katie plus a rescue basset hound named Baumer and a dachshund named Red. It was a party of 4 humans, 2 dogs and 90 pigs in attendance for this farm tour. Some of the pigs were very welcoming with nibbles on shoes and nustles of their noses on the tour attendee's legs. Other pigs could care less and didn't even pick up their heads in acknowledgement! There were even some piglets that squeeled as they ran through the woods towards Benji as he called for them.

Benji shared with Athens Food Tours how he arrived at running his own sustainable pig farm. Starting out as a biologist, then moving to farm work for many years, he is bringing all of his work experience together at Anderson Farms.  Athens Food Tours thinks his experience in understanding the land, plants and animals has come together perfectly to foster a truly sustainable pig farm. Benji firmly believes in his work at Anderson Farms and Athens Food Tours does too.
