Question: Need a restaurant recommendation?
answer: Sr. Sol
Tonight was a first for me. My first tasting at Sr. Sol. It was wonderful!
I can't quite say it was my first visit to Sr. Sol at 175 Tallassee Rd., because I have attempted to eat there before, but our party couldn't find parking. Parking is tricky at Sr. Sol's Tallassee location because the restaurant is located next to a gas station in an old Huddle House space. So parking is shared with the gas station. However, the fact that Sr. Sol is located next to a gas station in an old Huddle House does not take away from the restaurant at all. Instead it seals in the creative ambiance and noncholant look that makes it feel so cool and captures my curiosity.
Tonight we were lucky! We got parking and I finally was able to try the infamous Sr. Sol. All my friends have told me it was in their top five of Athens restaurants, so being the "food tour lady" I couldn't understand why I had never been here before.I felt it was time to fix that.
As soon as we arrived, I felt confident we had made the right choice, as I was greeted by my friend April Moore Skelton, a fellow foodie and employee of Athens' CVB and Canopy Studio. The we sat down next to Paige and Brian of Athens Food & Culture. WOW! It was a foodie party!
I ordered the Chile Relleno & Tamal. Both were great! The Chile Relleno was my favorite! As I was mid-way through my meal, I heard a lady who had just walked through the door announce to the waitress, "I ate lunch here today".This was supper, meaning she made a conscious decision to eat at the same restaurant two times in one day. Now that is love! I was so curious about this lady's enjoyment of Sr. Sol that I introduced myself and said, " Did I hear you correctly? Did you say that you ate lunch here?". She laughed and said, "Yes! I love this place!".
So it is confirmed... Sr. Sol is a must eat in Athens. It is a mexican dive and mexican gourmet rolled into one and totally worth it! Your food comes out quickly, the service is great and the food speaks for itself!
Parking may be tricky, but be patient. You will soon be able to enjoy their second location on Broad Street in the building formerly occupied by El Patron (2455 W. Broad Street).
