Stuffed Burger: Athens New Burger

Food Tour Intern Sarah Proctor sat down with Nick Reilly who is the General Manager at Stuffed Burger to talk about their concept of cooking the toppings into the meat of the burger. The burgers at Stuffed Burger are huge and are cooked in house every day. If you’re not into burgers, they have a variety of other menu items including hotdogs and milkshakes!
Q: Where did you grow up?
Nick: I grew up in Norristown, Pennsylvania
Q: How long have you been in Athens?
Nick: I have been here since 1999, so about 13 years
Q: Did you always know you wanted to own restaurants?
Nick: Not at all. I started working for a Japanese steakhouse a while ago and got sucked into the food industry.
Q: Is Stuffed Burger an Athens original? not a chain?
Nick: Yes, this is the one and only. The idea arose in August 2011 and moved quickly after that.
Q: How long from concept to completion did it take to develop stuffed burger?
Nick: It was really fast. I would say about 2 months. The owners had the idea in August or September and I was hired in October.
Q: Who are the owners?
Nick: The owners are Hank Cheatham and Brittain Lawson.
Q: What are their backgrounds?
Nick: Cheatham owns a bar downtown and they know each other through family.
Q: Have they ever owned a restaurant before?
Nick: Never. Just Cheatham owning a bar.
Q: Where did the idea for toppings cooked into the meat come from?
Nick: Well the owners were sitting around talking about what to do next and the idea came up. I think they saw something like it on the food channel and Athens didn’t have anything like Stuffed Burger.
Q: Do your customers seem to have a favorite type of burger or other menu item yet?
Nick: Definitely. The bacon and cheese stuffed burgers fly out the door.
Q: What are some of your other hobbies?
Nick: I really like to go to other restaurants in Athens. And I cook at home a lot.
Q: What are your favorite Athens restaurants besides stuffed burger?
Nick: I like Big City Bread, Sr. Sol, and Shokitini.
Q: How often do you eat a stuffed burger?
Nick: I would say about three times a week.
Q: Do you have any sort of student deals or discounts?
Nick: We do. We have a deal that you can receive a free drink with your meal if you bring in a student I.D. and it doesn’t have to be UGA, it can be any student I.D.- high school or Athens Tech.Food Tour Intern Sarah Proctor
